Annual, 10-35 cm, ± branched from base, sparsely villous-lanate, green. Stem without glandular hairs. Leaves ovate to oblong, obtuse or acutish, dentate, crenate-dentate to entire, lamina 10-25 x5-12 mm, lowermost shortly petiolate. Verticillasters distant, ± numerous, 4-6-flowered. Calyx 5-10 mm, not saccate at base, 2-lipped; teeth spiny-aristate, patent, upper tooth broadly ovate, 3-6 mm, 4 lower teeth lanceolate, 2-3 mm. Corolla White, 7-10 mm. Fl. 5-6. Cultivated fields, roadsides, waste places, nr s.l.
Mediterranean area . Medit. element. Subsp. purpurea Heywood is confined to W. Balkans.
