Annual or biennial, erect. Stems 10-100 cm. Leaves linear or linear-lanceolate, 10-45 mm, x 1,5-5 mm, acute, 3-nerved. Pedicels erect. Sepals broadly elliptic-ovate, 5-9 mm, ± acuminate. Petals blue, 10-15 mm. Stigmas clavate-filiform. Capsule 7-8 mm, indehiscent or subdehiscent. Fl. 4. Cultivated as a field crop, occasionally escaping.
A species of numerous cultivars, grown for its fibre and the linseed oil obtained from its seeds.
