Plant 20-40 cm. Stem thick, densely covered with brownish sheathing scales; scales obtuse, 3-5 cm. Raceme fairly dense, but rather lax below, 20-30-flowered. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, as long as ovary. Sepals and petals ovate, obtuse, connivent into open hood, c. 10-12 mm diam. Labellum pendent, ± recurved, twice as long as perianth, basal part slightly concave, apical with 2 rounded, falcately diverging lateral lobes. Fl. 6-7. Mainly shady Fagus forests on basic soils, 250-1950 m.
