Plants slender, 20-60 cm. Tubers ovoid± abruptly contracted into a sometimes root-like 'tail'. Stem angled above, with 2 basal, subopposite oblong-lanceolate or ovate leaves,attenuate into a petiole. Spike many-flowered, sometimes dense. Bracts lanceolate, c. as long as ovary. Flowers white, sweet-scented. Lateral sepals lanceolate, 8-10 mm, dorsal slightly shorter, ovate--triangular. Petals linear-lanceolate. Labellum directed downwards, 10-15 mm, White, rarely pale greenish-yellow. Spur filiform, longer than ovary, to 30 mm. Column c. 3 mm tall; viscid discs small, ovate. Fl. 5-7. Open forest, forest margins, meadows, on calcareous and acid soil, s.l.-2000 m.
