Plant 1-2 m. Rhizome short, stout, erect. Fronds tufted, 2-pinnate, outer fronds sterile, the inner fertile. Petiole stout, hairy when young, up to half the length of frond. Lamina bipinnate; on fertile leaves the lower 3-5 pairs of sterile pinnae, 1-pinnate, with 6-12 pairs of oblong pinnules; pinnules 3-6 cm long with truncate bases. Fertile pinnae in 5-8 pairs each with 6-16 pairs of fertile pinnules; fertile pinnules brown, sporangial clusters 0,25 cm in diameter. Spores ripe 5-7. On stream banks and in damp shady woods, 50-1300 m.
Widely scattered in N. Temperate regions. In U.S.S.R. restricted to Caucasia.
