Stems erect, up to 90 cm. Leaves variable, usually pinnatifid or pinnatisect, the segments dentate, the terminal segment lanceolate, much longer than the lateral segments. Peduncles spreading-hispid, rarely adpressed-setose. Petals red to crimson, rarely white, with or without a blotch at the base, very variable in size. Capsule glabrous, globose to subglobose, rounded at the base, about twice as long as broad. Disc flat with up to 18 stigmas. Fl. 3-8. Fields, waste places, etc., s.l-1400 m.
Temperate Eurasia, N.W. Africa. A very variable species.
