Erect annual, 10-40 cm. Leaves mostly linear, 20-50 x 1-5 mm, lower and median opposite, upper often alternate. Racemes very lax, glandular-pubescent. Bracts foliaceous, linear, longer than flowers and fruits. Pedicels to 1 mm in flower, 3-4 mm in fruit. Calyx lobes linear-hirsute. Corolla mauvish-pink, 10-12 mm, saccate below, shorter than longest calyx lobe. Capsule 8-10 mm, gibbous at base, viscid-hirsute. Seeds 1 mm. Fl. 4-6. Rocky limestone slopes, fallow fields, cemeteries, s.l.-700 m.
Mainly W. & C. Europe. Mediterranean area, S. Russia, S.W. Asia; often naturalized in the eastern part of its range.
