Herbaceous perennial. Rhizome and base of stems strongly branched, usually blackening when dry. Stems 6-30 cm, ascending or erect, often rather densely pubescent with long ± crisp hairs sometimes ± indistinctly in 2 rows. Petiole 1-6 mm, usually with 0,6-1,5 mm cilia; lamina 8-27 x 4-18 mm, sparsely pubescent or subglabrous, lower broadly ovate to orbicular, apex obtuse, base truncate, upper ovate to lanceolate, apex ± acute, base shortly cuneate, margins coarsely and ± irregularly serrate, often deeply incised or subpinnatifid near base. Racemes 2-5, usually opposite, 10-25-flowered, lax, peduncles 2-5 cm. Pedicels 9-16 mm in fruit, 2-3 x length of bracts, patent or slightly curved upwards, usually densely pubescent, rarely glandular. Lower bracts ovate or elliptic, sometimes ± serrate. Calyx 3-3,5 mm in flower, 4-5,5 mm in fruit, lobes 4, eglandular-pubescent, ciliate or glabrous, rarely glandular. Corolla white, pale lilac or pale blue, with purple veins, 8-13 mm diam. Style 2,5-4 mm. Capsule transversely elliptic, 2,8-4,2 x 3,7-5,3 mm, base broadly truncate, apex distinctly emarginate, not exceeding calyx. Seeds 4-8, cymbiform, 0,3-1,8 x 0,9-1,5 mm, smooth. Fl. 4-7. Forests, hedges, scrub, meadows, alpine pastures, rocky slopes, 100-2700 m.
