Perennial herb, with stout, sparsely branched caudex. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, 6-15 x 3-5 cm, obtuse with a fine mucro, margin undulate and hyaline, narrowing into a flattish petiole. Scapes branching near or above middle, ± dichotomous below, paniculate above. Spikelets 3-4 mm, 2-3-flowered, arranged in dense globose heads along branches. Outer bract ovate, 1-1.3 mm, broadly hyaline-margined; first inner bract similar, 1.5 x as long as outer, hyaline; second inner bract broadly obovate, 2 x longer than outer, ± retuse, broadly hyaline-margined. Calyx obconical, tube densely hairy on and between veins; lobes 5, rounded; veins ending below margin. Petals pale violet. Fl. 6-9. Saline places inland, 900-1100 m.
