Tufted annual, flowering stems 20-40 cm. Upper leaf blade linear-lanceolate, 2-5 mm broad, pilose or ciliate. Spike narrowly linear-lanceolate , 5-7 cm; rachis markedly sinuate, bearing 5-7 spikelets, Spike falling entire or ultimately disarticulating into broadly cylindrical spikelets 2-3 x as long as broad. Vestigial spikelets 1-2. Glumes of lateral spikelets ovate-oblong, 8-9 mm, asymmetrical, veins parallel but of unequal width, with a terminal triangular tooth and a slender awn usually 1-2 x florets. Uppermost spikelet bearing 3-4 slender ± strict awns arising from glumes and lemmas and usually shorter than spike; outer glume 2-toothed at base of awn; 2 lower lemmas bearing 2 small teeth at base of awn. 2n = 28. Fl. 5-6. Stony and sandy slopes, vineyards, fallow fields, rarely irrigated steppe, 400-1850 m.
