Perennial. Stems to 5 m, simple or shortly branched from nodes. Ligule truncate, 1-1.5 mm, with a row of dense short cilia on upper margin. Leaf blades rounded or cordate at base, to 60 x 6 cm, long-attenuate at apex, scabrid. Panicle to 70 cm. Spikelets 2-4-flowered. Glumes equal, glabrous, 9-14.5 mm. Lemma lanceolate, 7-12 mm, with 3 veins, each produced into a short awn, median awn 1.5-4 mm, twice as long as laterals; hairs on dorsal surface 6-7 mm. Anthers 2.5-3 mm. Fl. 10. Watersides, hedges, s.l.-250 m.
