Annual. Stem 10-33 cm, erect or ascending from base, glabrous, smooth, shiny. Leaf sheaths ± villous; ligule 0.5-0.7 mm, truncate; blades 1-6.5 cm x 0.6-4 mm, narrowly linear, acuminate, villous especially beneath. Inflorescence 6-15 cm x 4-15 mm. Spikelets 7-18 mm. Rachilla segments 2-3 mm, glabrous. Glumes glabrous to scabrid on veins, sometimes villous; lower 3.2-5 mm, lanceolate, acute; upper 5-10 mm, oblong obtuse, bifid at apex. Lemma 4.3-8 mm, lanceolate, glabrous or villous; callus hairless; awn to 15 mm, arising in upper 1/3-1/4 of lemma, geniculate and slightly twisted in lower part. Palea 3.5-7.5 mm, ciliate on keels. Anthers 2.5-5 mm. Caryopsis oblong, 0.5-3 mm. 2n = 14. Fl. 5-7. Lightly grazed damp grassy slopes on volcanic rocks and sandy soil near sea, s.l.-1485 m.
