Caespitose perennial. Stems 50-100 cm, with bulbous swelling at base. Leaves 3-7 mm broad, scabrid, sometimes pilose on upper surface. Spike 6-13 cm x 6-10 mm, linear, dense, with very fragile rachis. Central spikelet: glumes 5-8 mm, narrowly laneeolate, often sparsely ciliate on margin, with awn 1-1.8 cm; lemma 8-11 mm, with awn 2-3.5 cm. Lateral spikelets male; glumes 1.3-2.5 cm , dissimilar, inner narrowly lanceolate, outer setaceous; lemma usually ± acuminate. 2n = 28. Fl. 5-7. Rocky limestone or igneous slopes, steppe, forest margins, lush meadows, also a cornfield weed, s.l.-2250 m.
