Ssp setosum: Perennial with a hard woody stock. Stems ± unbranched, erect, strict, 10-40 cm, glabrous. Lower ochreae strongly laciniate, hyaline. Leaves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, flat or rarely somewhat revolute, greyish-green, less than 5mm broad. Inflorescence a branched spike, the flowers in rather distant fascicles. Perianth white to pink, pink-veined, c.3 mm, shorter than the bracts. Nut blackish, included in the perianth. Fl. 7-9. Slopes, rocks, serees, 1300-3500 m.

Ssp luzuloides: Similar to P. setosum, but the leaves lanceolate, more than 5 mm broad, strongly revolute at the margins, and the stem branched below the inflorescence. Often taller and more robust than P. setosum. Fl 7-9. Slopes and ledges, 2000-3100 m.
