Glabrous or sparsely pilose annual, 3-35 cm. Stem branched, leafy. Lower leaves trilobed or trisect, with broad, crenately lobed divisions; upper stem leaves 2-3-partite into elliptical or incised segments. Peduncles slender, about as long or shorter than the subtending leaf. Sepals reflexed. Petals 5-9 mm. Achenes broadly elliptical, compressed, 3-5 mm, strongly muricate with sharp projections up to 1 mm long, keel narrow with a groove on either side; beak lanceolate, uncinate, 2-3 mm. Fl. 3-5. Moist fields, muddy roadsides, ditches, etc., s.l.-800 m.
