Glabrescent annual, 10-40 cm. Stem fistulose, many-flowered. Lower stem leaves palmately lobed, the divisions crenate-lobulate; upper stem leaves tripartite into linear-oblong segments, or undivided. Sepals reflexed. Petals 2-4 mm, shorter than the round or oblong torus. Achenes very numerous, suborbicular, tubby, 1 mm, transversely wrinkled; beak minute. Fl. 5-7. Shallow waters, muddy places, often in ditches, nr. s.I.-1750 m.
