Spiny shrub, 2-4 m, with arching branches. Leaves ovate, ± serrulate, glabrous, herbaceous, 2-4 x as long as petiole. Cymes lax. Sepals glabrous. Fruit 2-2,5 cm across, including the usually undulate equatorial wing. Fl. 5-7. Gorges, river valleys, clearings and waste places, s.l.-1400 m.
S. Europe, Crimea, Caucasia, W. Syria, N. & S.W. Iran, N. Iraq, C. Asia. An invasive weed, often forming impenetrable thickets, especially where forest has been destroyed.
