Shrub up to 3 m, with opposite or ± alternate, thorny branches. Young shoots usually glabrous, dark reddish brown. Leaves opposite or alternate, leathery, elliptic-oblong, 2,5-5 x 1,3-2,6 cm, apex subacute, glabrous on both sides or rarely sparsely pubescent, lateral veins 3-4 on each side, with brownish reticulate venation below; petiole 10-23 mm. Fruiting pedicels 5-8 mm. Fruit glabrous, 6-7 mm diam., black. Groove of seed open, not bifid. Dry slopes, rocks, 1000-1300 m.
Endemic? R. petiolaris is cultivated in Anatolia , a yellow dye being obtained from its seeds.
