Erect shrub or small tree, 8-10 m, sparingly thorny. Leaves obovate to rhombic ovate, 1,5-2,5 x 1,5-2,5 cm, base cuneate, green, villous, more densely so beneath; lobes 3-7, deeply incised, on sterile shoots almost to the midrib, glandular-serrate; petioles 3-10 mm. Corymbs 4-8-flowered. Flowers white, 2-2.5 cm diam.; sepals large, triangular, reflexed in fruit; styles 5. Fruit yellow, sometimes suffused with red, globose, c. 2 cm diam., pubescent especially near the apex and base; pyrenes 5. Fl. 6. Rocky limestone slopes in Pinus or Quercus forest, 800-1800 m.
