Spiny shrub 2-3 m , spines c. 1 cm; twigs villous when young, becoming glabrous. Leaves lanceolate to obovate, 5-12 x 2-6 cm, entire or serrulate, bilaterally adpressed-pubescent or subglabrous above and adpressed-pubescent beneath, especially along the midrib. Flowers white, 3-4 cm diam.; pedicels c. 5 mm; calyx densely pubescent, sepals longer than petals. Fruit 1,5-3 cm. Fl. 5-6. Native, at least in N. Anatolia, open forest, on rocks and in macchie, s.l.-1650 m; also widely cultivated.
Apparently native in the E. Balkans, Crimea, Caucasia, N. Iran, Khorassan , and N. Iraq. Hyrcano-Euxine element. Long-cultivated for its edible fruits .
