Annual herb. Stems 20-50 cm, smooth. Leaves in whorls of up to 6, linear-lanceolate to linear, 11-25 x 2-3 mm, revolute. Spikes terminal and lateral, 2-8.5 cm, lax; peduncles elongate, spreading. Bracts linear-lanceolate, 5-7 mm, stiffly fimbriate along margins , with a 1-1.5 mm terminal awn; bracteoles similar, but somewhat shorter and narrower. Flowers 5-merous, corolla yellowish, 8-10 mm, tube rough, nodose when dry. Fruits finely granulate. Fl. 6. Rocky slopes, clearings in Quercus scrub.
