Annual herb. Stems 15-45 cm, ± rough to smooth. Leaves in Whorls of up to 8, narrowly lanceolate to linear, 10-25 x 1-3 mm. Spikes terminal and lateral, 1.5-8 cm, often slightly tetrastichous, ± lax to dense, peduncles short to elongate, ascending to divaricate; middle bracts overlapping to 1/2 or over 1/2 their length, each subtending a single flower, 5-6 cm, broadly lanceolate-acuminate, carinate, margin flat, broadly hyaline, ciliolate, surface ± scabrid, with short hyaline awn. Flowers 5-merous; corolla yellowish, 6-8 mm, exceeding bracts, tube ± scabrous, lobes glabrous or sometimes with a tuft of hairs. Fruits finely granulate. Fl. 5-7. Steppe, rocky habitats, vineyards, orchards, fields, s.l.-1500 m.
