Shrub or small tree up to 10 m. Young branches glabrous. Leaves undivided or very shortly lobed, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, 4,5-9 x 3-6 cm, cordate at base, margin irregularly doubly serrate, glabrous on both sides or pubescent on the main veins beneath; petiole glabrous, 2-5,5 cm. Flowers in subcorymbose panicles as broad as long, erect and long-peduncled. Fruit wings usually parallel, sometimes reddish, 15-20 x 7-10 mm; nutlets glabrous , ovate, slightly compressed; loculus glabrous. FI. 5-6. Deciduous oak scrub, rocky slopes, river valley, 500-1700 m.
N. Balkans, eastern C. Europe, S. Russia, Caucasia, N. Iran. In Europe a characteristic species of the Sarmatian province.
