Plant 50-100 cm. Rhizome creeping with more or less solitary leaves . Frond lanceolate, dying in autumn. Petiole about ½ length of frond, blackish at base, with very few scales or glabrous. Lamina 1-pinnate, soft, pale green, with a few sparse hairs, glands absent, pinnae pinnatifid, all in one plane and parallel, the lowermost pairs much reduced. Margins of sterile pinna lobes flat; of fertile ones sharply reflexed. Sori very small ± confluent, with a thin irregularly toothed indusium. In shallow water at edge of lakes & in Sparganium, Alnus- Salix swamp, 10-1400 m.
Scattered in N. Temperate regions, N. tropical and S. Africa, New Zealand.
