Semi-terrestrial herb. Stem erect, 25-110 cm. Leaves often much overtopping stem, 10-17 mm broad, distinctly keeled beneath, triangular in transverse section. Inflorescence branched, pedicels of capitula not fused with main axis; female capitula 1-2, male capitula usually at least 8-10 on main axis and each branch. Perianth segments thick, dark brown to black at apex. Anthers 1-1.5 mm. Seed with 6-10 longitudinal ridges. Fl. 6-8. Lakeshores, river banks, marshes, channels, ditches, s.l.-1950 m.
1. Fruit ellipsoid, 5-8 x 3-4 mm, c. 1/2 projecting from capitulum, yellowish to light brown, shiny, terete; style 3-4 mm; seeds with narrow base; main axis with at least 10, usually 15-20 male capitula subsp. neglectum
1. Fruit obpyramidal, c. 1/3 projecting from compact capitulum, dark brown to dull blackish-brown in apical part, lower part angled in transverse section; seeds with rounded base; main axis with usually not more than 10 male capitula
   2. Fruit 6-8 x 3-6 mm, upper part ± flattened, dark brown; style 2 mm; seed c. 2/3 x fruit , with several ridges elongated to base subsp. erectum
   2. Fruit 6-7 x 2.5-3.5 mm, upper part domed, blackish-brown; style 2-3 mm, seed c. 1/2 x fruit , with not more than 1 ridge elongated to base subsp. microcarpum
