Acaulous perennial herb, 3-12 cm, with long overground stolons rooting at their ends. Stipules broadly lanceolate, glandular-fimbriate. Petioles with an indumentum of short deflexed hairs. Leaves ovate-orbicular, obtuse, cordate at the base, crenate, ± glabrous. Flowers fragrant, purple, the lower petal 11-16 mm. Capsules lying on the ground when ripe. Fl. 4-5. Often in shady places, s.l.-1600 m.
Most of Europe, Caucasia, W. Syria, N. Iran, N. Iraq, Cyprus, N.W. Africa.
