Caulescent perennial herb, up to 25 cm, often with a woody rootstock. Main axis terminating in a rosette. Stipules narrowly lanceolate, fimbriate. Leaves ovate-cordate, crenate, Pedicels glabrous. Sepals lanceolate, acute, their appendages very short. Corolla lilac, the spur dark purple; petals narrow, not overlapping, the lowermost up to 24 mm. Head of the style hairy. Fagus forest and scrub, up to 500 m.
