Perennial. Flowering stems 70-150 cm, ± erect, usually stout, leafy in lower 1/4-1/3. Leaves greenish, soft, flexible, margins scabrid. Inflorescence simple, dense. Bracts 20-30 mm, lanceolate to ovate. Fruiting pedicels 15-25 mm, jointed above the middle. Perianth segments 18-20 mm, white. Capsule globose, 8 mm diam. Fl. 5-7. Rocky or stony slopes, alpine meadows, clearings in Abies, Cedrus and Pinus forests, 850-2200 m.
