Biennial. Roots numerous, slender. Flowering stems 40--65 cm, , erect, 5-17 mm broad, leafy in lower half; leafless part ± cylindrical to ungulate, sulcate or striate. Leaves glaucous, linear, tapering towards the apex, dilated with broad, scarious margins at base; margins scabrid, Inflorescence simple, 25-35 cm long, densely flowered. Bracts scarious, 15-25 mm, lanceolate, long-acuminate. Bracteoles scarious. Flowers in groups on each node. Fruiting pedicels 15-27 mm, jointed at or above the middle. Perianth segments 15-17 mm, outer segments bicolored, outside brown, inside white, inner ones concolorous, white.
