Robust annual up to 2,5 m with only the young shoots farinose. Leaves large, more than 10 cm, broadly ovate-lanceolate, the upper narrower, acuminate entire or weakly toothed. Inflorescence a dense ± terminal panicle. Bracteoles elongate-cordate, shining, many-nerved. Fl. 5-7. Cultivated land, steppe, as an escape from cultivation, s.l.-1250 m.
Typically known only in cultivation; perhaps wild in the Caucasus and certainly so in C. Asia and Siberia. It may possibly have originated in cultivation from A. nitens and A. heterosperma.
