Annual or perennial, glabrescent or nearly so, erect, 25-70 cm. Lower leaves triangular to hastate or rhomboid. Flowers in sessile, dense, globose glomeruli, bracts linear-Ianceolate, the uppermost ebracteate. Perianth segments 3-5, at first green, later red and fleshy in fruit . Seed vertical, dark red-brown, flat or grooved at the margin, densely punctate-pitted. FI. 5-7. Steppe in the mountain region, roadside banks, 1200-2800 m.
