Jointed, richly-branched, prostrate perennial with long shoots and bud-like short shoots, grey-green, glabrous. Leaves opposite, united in pairs, small, scale-like. Flowering branches simple or shortly and regularly branched. Flowers hermaphrodite or polygamous, in threes in the axils of scutate scale-leaves. Perianth segments 3, broadly ovate, blunt, membranous, two with green apices, united in the lower 1/3 stamen 1. Stigmas 2. Seed vertical, smooth, weakly papillose at the side of the funicle. Embryo curved.-Monotypic. Fl. 7-9. Salt marshes, shores of salt-lakes, s.I.-1000 m.
Very frequent from S. Europe through Asia to Mongolia; N. Africa.
