Herb, glabrous or with fragile bristles. Leaves linear-subulate, flat to terete, broadened and membranous-margined at the base, the bracts broader and shorter. Flowers hermaphrodite, 1-3 in the bract axils, usually concentrated at the ends of the twigs. Bracts 2, longer than the flower, stiff, ovate-triangular, with a long clear spine. Perianth segments 5, free to the base, ovate, acuminate, unequally broad and sometimes also unequally long, with a fan-shaped wing on the back, the tip of the wing stiff, with a strongly ribbed middle nerve. Fl. 5-7. Coasts, and waste places inland.
