Bulb ovoid, c. 1.5 cm diam.; outer tunics membranous. Stem 45-115 cm, often red. Leaves 4-11, 6-25 mm broad, flat, keeled, scabrid at margin, withered at anthesis. Spathe 1-valved, quickly caducous, ovate at base, abruptly contracted into a beak to 17 cm. Umbel globose, 3-6 cm, many-flowered. Pedicels 10-25 mm, subequal. Perianth cylindrical to campanulate; segments pale green or purple, 2.5-4 mm, usually lanceolate, acute or obtuse, densely covered with small papillae; inner narrowly oblong, truncate or emarginate. Stamens long-exserted; inner filaments ciliate at base; median cusp ½ x basal lamina. Anthers yellow or purple. Capsule c. 4 mm.
