Bulb subglobose, 1.5-3 cm diam.; outer tunics papery, blackish. Stem 30-60 cm. Leaves 2-4, oblong-lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, 2-8 mm broad, flat, considerably shorter than stem, smooth or scabrid on margin. Spathe 2-3-valved; valves shortly acuminate, shorter than umbel. Umbel fastigiate-hemispherical or ± spherical, 3-4 cm diam., many-flowered, dense. Pedicels 9-18 mm, nearly equal. Perianth patent at anthesis, later reflexed and twisted; segments dark maroon-purple, narrowly oblong or linear, 3-4.5 mm, obtuse. Filaments purple, connate at base and adnate to perianth; outer narrowly triangular, attenuate from base, inner oblong-quadrate, 3-lobed at apex; lateral lobes short and rounded, anther-bearing lobe subulate and longer. Anthers purple. Capsule subglobose, 3-5 x 4-5 mm. Fl. 6-7. Quercus forest, alpine dwarf scrub, rocky igneous or sandy slopes, meadows, montane steppe, fallow and wheat fields, 900-2800 m
