Bulb ovoid, 0.75-1.5 cm diam.; outer tunics papyraceous, grey. Stem 40-70 cm. Leaves 3-4, fistulose, 2-3 mm broad, semicylindrical, canaliculate, usually somewhat scabrid on margin of channel. Spathe 2-valved; valves with short beak, 2 x shorter than umbel. Umbel globose or hemispherical, 2-3 cm diam., many-flowered, dense. Pedicels subequal, 2-3 x perianth and slightly scabrid beneath it, bracteolate at base. Perianth oblong-ovoid; segments brownish vinous-purple, dark wine-red or more rarely light purple with darker mid-vein, c. 4 mm, connivent, oblong, smooth, outer ones obtuse, keeled. Filaments somewhat longer than perianth segments, ciliate; median cusp of inner filaments equalling lateral cusps and half as long as narrowly linear basal lamina. Style purple, exserted. Capsule broadly elliptic, c. 4 mm. Fl. 6-8. Dry stony slopes, roadsides, 830-2510 m.
