Erect glabrous biennial. Stem angled, deeply sulcate, 30-100 cm. Leaflets 5-7 per leaf, petiolulate, deltate-rhombic, sometimes cuneate, 10-30 x 7-35 mm, usually lobed and serrate to crenate, glabrous. Umbels usually leaf-opposed, short peduncled to sessile; rays 4-12, unequal, 1-25 cm; bracts and bracteoles absent; flowers up to 20 per umbellule. Mericarps 1,5-2 x 1 mm. Fl. 5-8. Coastal plains, marshy ground, s.l.-c. 200 m; also cultivated.

C., S. & E. Europe, Asia, Africa, N. & C. America; cultivated throughout the world as a vegetable .
