Glabrous biennial. Stem erect, terete, striate, 50-80 cm. Leaves triangular-ovate in outline, 3-10 x 2-7 cm, glabrous; segments cuneate-obovate to lanceolate-linear, usually deeply lobed with irregularly crenate lobes. Inflorescence paniculate-corymbose, umbels long-peduncled, rays 7-20, subequal, 15-4 cm; bracts 1-3, subulate, 3-7 mm, entire or 3-fid; bracteoles 5-8, subulate, small. Mericarps 2,5-3 x 0,5 mm, slightly arcuate at maturity. Fl. 6-8. Fields, vineyards, always cultivated or as an escape from cultivation, s.l.-2000 m.
Cultivated all over the world as a vegetable ; the origin of this species is still unknown.
