Plant ± erect, ± glabrous, pilose or setose, 6-35 cm. Leaves oblong to oblong-ovate, 2-pinnate or pinnatisect, 6-20 x 1-4 cm, ultimate lobes linear to lanceolate, 0,75-8,0 mm. Rays 1-2, usually ± equal, 5-20 mm, thick in fruit. Bracteoles 3-5, entire to deeply 2-5-toothed from apex, seldom with membranous margin, 5-10 x 1,5-4 mm. Pedicels 2-7, ± equal, 2-4 mm. Fruit usually scabrid, occasionally glabrous, 3-7,5 cm x 1-3,5 mm; beak gradually attenuate to apex, ciliate, somewhat striate, dorsally compressed, longer than fertile portion. Ridges brownish-green, usually as broad as or broader than dark valleculae. Fl. 3-6. Rocky limestone slopes, Pinus and Populus plantations, hedgebanks, roadsides, fieldsides, s.l.-980 m.
W., C. & S. Europe, Mediterranean area, S.W. Asia and eastwards to Kashmir and Punjab; occurring as an alien in northern Europe and Northern America.
