Biennial , 70-100 cm, strigulose-pubescent; root fusiform. Stem erect and sulcate. Lower leaves 1-pinnate; leaflets 5-10-paired, overlapping, 4-8 cm, sessile, ovate, simple or shortly 2-3-lobed, crenate-dentate; upper leaves reduced to linear-lanceolate sheaths. Rays 8-15, very unequal, 5-18 cm. Petals purplish. Fruit broadly obovate, slightly emarginate, 15-22 x 10-14 mm, sparsely strigulose-pubescent when mature; dorsal vittae filiform, in groups of 3-5 between each pair of ridges, ½ as long as mericarp. Fl. 7. Meadows and woods.
