Plant to 1.5 m or more. Leaves long-petiolate, sheath purple-spotted; lamina ± reniform in outline, 10-20 x 11-25 cm, segments 9-13, narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate, acute. Scape usually unspotted, stout, base concealed by sheathing leaf bases. Spathe 20-50 cm, glabrous or rarely covered with short white hairs; lower part greenish or dark purple; upper part with abaxial surface greenish, adaxial dark purple or purplish brown; margins undulate. Spadix subequal to spathe, 22-40 cm or more; male and female zones ± contiguous; sterile flowers few or absent; appendix divided into a short, pale brown stipe and a much longer, dark purple clavate portion. Berry orange-red. Fl. 5-6. Field margins, ruins, disturbed habitats, 30-475 m.
