Rootstock globose. Stems 10-25 cm, simple or branched. Leaves cordate-ovate to cordate-rotund, 2.5-4 x 2-4 cm, obtuse or retuse, .glabrous or puberulent; petiole 5-10 mm. Peduncle 1-3 mm. Perianth 2.5-4 cm, greenish-yellow and glabrous outside; utricle 3-7 mm broad, ovoid; tube straight, 1-3 mm broad at base, gradually dilated above to 7 mm, with purple striations inside, veins showing faintly on outside; limb as long as or shorter than tube, oblong-lanceolate, curved forwards and marked with 5-7 purplish-brown veins inside which may fuse in a dark triangular blotch. Ovary puberulent.Capsule oblong-globose, 1-3 cm. Fl. 4-6. Stony slopes and woodlands, 700-2100 m.
Europe. Allied to another S. European species, A. longa L. , which, however, has an elongate rootstock and apparently greenish-brown perianth.
