Erect, glabrous, 'feathery' herb. Stem 30-100 cm, cylindrical. Branches divaricate . Scale leaves not spurred. Cladode fascicles overlapping, green; cladodes usually 15-40, curved-ascending, filiform and terete, acute, glabrous. Flowers 1-2 in cladode fascicles. Pedicels 10-24 mm, articulate just below perianth. Male perianth 6-8 mm, apparently cream with greenish or brownish fascia. Anthers orbicular, only 0.3-0.4 mm, much shorter than maments. Berry red, 10-15 mm; seeds 2-6. Fl. 5; Montane woods, meadows, 720-1200 m.
