Bulb 1.5-3 cm diam.; tunics pinkish or reddish. Leaves 3-6, erect, spreading or sinuous, linear-lanceolate, attenuate, 8-70 cm x 5-15 mm, canaliculate. Scape 8-30 cm, erect, usually shorter than leaves. Raceme lax, cylindrical, 6-12 cm, elongating in fruit. Pedicels of fertile flowers ascending, horizontal or slightly deflexed, 1.5-9 mm, shorter or occasionally longer than flowers. Fertile flowers oblong or obconical-oblong, 5-9 x2.5-3.5 mm, slightly waisted, shoulders rounded, distal part of perianth deep brown, proximal part pale brown or dirty greenish; lobes bright ochreous yellow. Pedicels of sterile flowers 5-9 mm, spreading horizontally or widely divergent, usually equal to pedicels of fertile flowers. Sterile flowers obovoid, 4-8 mm, shorter or longer than fertile ones, amethyst or purplish. Capsule ovate-orbicular, not or scarcely emarginate, valves weakly compressed. 2n = 18, 36. Fl. 4-5. Rocky calcareous slopes, phrygana, uncultivated ground, and on fixed dunes in Pinus pinea Myrtus forest, s.l. -800 m.
