Bulb 1-3 cm diam., usually without offsets; tunics pale pinkish brown. Leaves 2-3, erecto-patent or falcate, oblanceolate, 5-20 cm x2-l5 mm, apex cucullate and shortly acuminate, upper surface glaucescent. Scape erect, 5-30 cm, often overtopping leaves. Raceme dense, ovoid to oblong, few-to many-flowered, 1-3 cm x 7-12 mm. Pedicels of fertile flowers patent to ± deflexed, 1-2.5 mm, usually shorter than flowers. Fertile flowers globose to obovoid, 3-5 x 2.3-5 mm, bright sky blue, constricted; lobes white or pale blue, 0.5-0.75 mm, scarcely recurved. Stamens biseriate, inserted at and above middle of perianth tube. Sterile flowers shortly pedicellate, larger or smaller than fertile flowers, few to many, 2.5-6 mm. Fruiting raceme remaining compact, often as broad as long. Capsule obovate-orbicular, emarginate. Seeds 2 mm broad. 2n = 18, 36. Fl. 4-6. Stony slopes and limestone scree, mountain pastures, flushes, sometimes with Pinus sylvestris or Juniperus communis subsp. nana, 1000-3000 m.
