Bulb 1-1.5 cm diam., not proliferating. Leaves 3-6, erecto-divergent, linear-lanceolate, 10-30 cm x 4-8 mm, stiff and strongly canaticulate, apex hooded, upper surface of lamina glaucous and paler than lower surface, in vivo with a whitish median line. Scape 8-20 cm, as long as leaves or somewhat shorter. Raceme cylindrical, dense at first, later elongating, 2-8 cm x 12-20 mm, 25-c. 100-flowered. Pedicels of fertile flowers horizontal to deflexed, 2.5-5 mm. Fertile flowers obovate-urceolate, 6-7 x 3-4 mm, deep china blue, abruptly narrowed at the calloused shoulders to a small 0.25-0.33 mm diam. orifice; lobes white , 0.5 mm. Stamens biseriate, attached at and above middle of tube. Sterile flowers shortly pedicelled, 3-5 mm, same colour as fertile flowers. Capsule suborbicular, 6-10 mm diam., bluish-tinged, apex emarginate. Seeds 2 mm diam. 2n = 18. Fl. 5. River marshes, wet meadows, on sticky clay, 1200-1500 m.
