Bulb 2-4 cm diam. Leaves 3-6, linear-lanceolate, 10-20 cm x 4-15 mm, canaliculate, greyish-green. Scape 10-18 cm, erect or procumbent, shorter than leaves. Raceme dense at first, later±lax, cylindrical, 4-6 cm, 12-30-flowered. Pedicels of fertile flowers 1-4 mm. Fertile flowers musk scented, narrowly oblong-ovoid, 7-9 mm, at first violaceous, at anthesis dirty greyish-white or glaucescent, brown when dried except for a pallid ivory band below corona, apex abruptly constricted, shoulders forming a light brown corona of 6 subglobose lobes; terminal lobes minute, brown, recurved. Stamens biseriate, attached at and above middle of perianth tube. Sterile flowers minute, violet. Capsule large, falling as an indehiscent unit, suborbicular, conspicuously emarginate, to 18 x 26 mm when pressed, valves strongly compressed. 2n = 18 . Fl. 5-6. Scree and steppe slopes, 800-1920 m.
