Fronds 10-25 cm, tufted, overwintering, triangular-lanceolate, usually 2-pinnate. Petiole usually shorter than lamina,· green above, black in lower half, swollen at base. Lamina dark green, shiny, rather fleshy, ultimate segments ovate to lanceolate with acute teeth. Sori 2-4 mm long, nearer the midrib than the margin, indusium elongate, membranaceous, whitish, entire. Spores ripe 7-8. On shady rocks, walls and banks, 10-1700 m.
Europe & W. Asia to Himalaya & N. Africa, scattered in S. Africa.
