Height 15-70 cm. Rootstock without stolons. Stems terete, longitudinally striped, ± densely adpressed- or spreading-pilose. Leaves loosely or densely woolly-pubescent, cauline similar to basal; basal 2-3-pinnatipartite, oblong-lanceolate, 2-10 x 1-3 cm, rachis usually dentate; median cauline ovate-oblong to broadly ovate, 2-5 x 1-3 cm, primary segments ± regularly 1-pinnatifid to 1-pinnatisect. Capitula 50-150 and more, corymbs 2-10 cm broad, peduncles 1-4 mm. Involucre broadly obovoid to oblong, 3-3.5 x 2-3 mm. Phyllaries triangular-lanceolate and acute, to oblong and obtuse, sparsely hairy to densely woolly-shaggy. Ligules 3-5, pale yellow above, white below, 0.8-1.5 mm; disc flowers 10-25. Fl. 6-8. Forest, steppe, rocky igneous and volcanic slopes, meadows, fallow fields, 400-2350 m.
