Plant 35-60 cm. Leaves 9-28 x 5-18 cm. Capitula in corymbs. Involucre 17-25 mm broad, open in fruit, ± glabrous; outer phyllaries acicular, hooked, yellowish-green, much less than 1 mm wide at median point; inner ones lanceolate at base, ovate-acuminate, membranous and purplish at apex. Flowers exceeding involucre. Fl. 7-7. Shady moist bank and ditches, 1000-2285 m.
